Hey Thistle Competitors!
In honor of Wayne Pignolet, our Thistle Class Chief Measurer, friend and brother who passed unexpectedly last year, we are having the second annual W.A. Pignolet Memorial Margarita Contest on Thursday August 7 at Sandusky Sailing Club. For those of you lucky enough to attend last year at Nationals at Toms River, it was a blast!
If you knew Wayne, you know he liked to have fun. He often showed up at regattas with all the mixings for Margaritas. After the races, he would get busy making Margaritas for anyone (21 and older only!) who wanted one…
We are carrying on with the tradition. After the racing and debrief on Thursday afternoon, there will be a contest to determine the best margarita in the Thistle Class. Teams of 3 (skipper and two crew) will mix up their favorite margarita and you will have a chance to judge the best.
Any funds leftover will be donated to the Thistle Class Growth and Promotion Fund.
How to Compete
The competition is limited to the first 10 teams to sign up (all team members must be over 21 to participate). Each team will pick one type of tequila (Blanco, Reposado, or Anjeo) and one type of orange liquor (Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Dekuypers). You provide the “secret ingredients” (mixers that make your margarita the best). The donation to enter the contest is $50 for Blanco or Reposado or $60 for Anjeo; this covers the cost of the alcohol.
If you would like to compete in this unique and fun event, please email Nancy Sauer at nesauer11@gmail.com by July 25. Entry donations must be received by July 28 via Venmo to @Nancy-Sauer-4. Your donation reserves your spot! If we have than 10 teams that would like to participate, we will do our best to accommodate!
Judging and Trophies
For a $5 donation, you can help judge the entrants! You will get a ticket and a small cup that will allow you to taste the different offerings. Once you decide which team you think has the best margarita, you will drop your ticket in a small bag bearing that team’s name. Each competing team will also get three tickets so that they too can vote for their favorite margarita! The team with the most tickets wins! (Anyone judging the contest must be over 21.)
There will be awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place – one for the skipper and each of two crew on the winning teams! In addition, a very special perpetual trophy, keeping in the theme of sailing and tequila, will be awarded.
