Nationals 2024 Welcome Letter from TRYC

2024 Thistle National Championships

Welcome to Toms River

Honoring Tradition, Camaraderie & Legacy Since 1871

TRYC was formally organized on July 1, 1871, electing its first commodore. A few weeks later, on July 26, 1871, a fleet of Catboats lined up for the club’s first regatta. At stake was the Toms River Challenge Cup, which is now the oldest perpetual trophy in the United States that is sailed for annually.

We are a year-round private family-friendly club whose mission is to promote “friendly competition and interest in activities connected with sailing, boating and yachting.” From major national regattas to local racing to a vibrant junior program with high school and college sailing, TRYC continues to be a premier destination for sailing and proud to be home to many national and world champion sailors. TRYC hosts some of the most recognized one-design regional and national championships including but not limited to the Flying Scot, Ensign, MC-Scow, WASZP, Lightning, and E-Scow classes, plus other PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Formula) races.

On behalf of the Toms River Yacht Club and its Board of Governors, welcome to the 2024 Thistle National Championships. It is an honor to be chosen to host your 2024 Nationals. We will be sailing on the Cedar Creek Course on Barnegat Bay. This area is known as one of the finest sailing areas on the East Coast. A daily fresh sea breeze is the norm here in the summer. In the recent past, we have hosted other major class championships for the Lightning Class and the Star Class and the Cedar Creek Course has yet to disappoint.

We are also looking forward to three great social events throughout the week at our club.  The other days are open for you to explore and enjoy the Jersey Shore if you chose. There are plenty of restaurants and the world-famous boardwalk with amusements, arcades and, of course, the Atlantic Ocean all within 15 minutes of Toms River Yacht Club. Thursday August 8th, which is an open day after racing, our club is open to our membership for Thirsty Thursday. This is a weekly club event wthat offers a pub-style menu.  This will be available to you and your guests as an option if you wish to remain local. Our pool is open in the summer, every day until 7 p.m. You are welcome as our guest to enjoy the pool at your convenience during your time here.

We understand that some of you like to camp. Unfortunately, there aren’t any camping options close to our yacht club. We have heard that some of you also bring sprinter-type vans. We are looking into several local places where a sprinter vans could park for the week where there are shower facilities, as we do not allow overnighting on club property. We are also looking into some housing options, whether it be on one of our member’s boats or at one of our member’s homes.  We will do our best to make these (limited) options available to you in the near future.

Our membership at Toms River Yacht Club thanks you in advance for participating in this regatta and we look forward to being your host for the week, sharing our club and providing world-class sailing and a fun social calendar.
