Basic Regatta Notes
Thistle Fleet 34 hosted the Oyster Roast Regatta, part of the East Coast Fall Series, on October 8 & 9, 2022. Twenty Thistles attended the Platinum-level Clean Regatta and were treated to sporty sailing in a fresh northwesterly breeze, which followed the passage of a cold front, providing 10-15 kts with higher gusts Saturday and 8-12 with gusts on Sunday.
On Saturday, Tom Lawton with crew Kat and Ryan Harris put on a clinic, winning all four races. Sunday, they proved to be a bit more human as John Baker, sailing with Joy Martin and Andrew Zuber had the lowest score for the day, but not enough to beat the Lawton team overall, settling for second. Chris Murphy, sailing with his 9 yr. old son Nate and Nationals champion crew Jon Duffet had a shot at winning the regatta, but didn’t survive one of the autogybe puffs and took a swim. They still ended up beating the team of Tom Hubble, John Yingling and Diane Paiva-Young on a tie breaker for third. Over the weekend, six teams went swimming in the chilly Chesapeake, plus numerous other boats retired early in the regatta, as conditions were a bit sporty.
Racers and guests enjoyed continental breakfast each morning and the traditional Oysters and Appetizers Party on Saturday evening, with 700 oysters steamed over a wood fire or shucked raw. Barbecue dinner overlooking the Annapolis harbor followed. There were enough dinner leftovers to provide lunch after racing on Sunday. PRO Steve Podlich received kudos for excellent race management. Hope to see you there next year.
Clean Regatta Notes
Now in our 6th year of Clean Regattas, this year we decided our stretch would be to go for Platinum-Level certification. We will be capturing our efforts in a required Sustainability Report, so please stay tuned for more details. Whether your fleet is just starting its Clean Regatta journey, or is ready to stretch just a little farther, we hope you will discover as we have that the Green Team extends beyond the folks involved in important tasks such as set-up and sorting—your whole regatta community is part of the Green Team!
