2023 Amendment Proposal 1:

Make Jib Luff Wire Optional

Submitted by Fleet #155, Research Triangle Thistle Fleet (12 of 14 eligible fleet members voted in support)

Proposal to change Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article XI, Paragraph 1 to make the jib luff wire optional.

Current Language:

Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article XIV, Paragraph 1 states: The jib luff wire shall have a maximum diameter of 1/8” and be constructed of 1×19 stainless steel.

Proposed Language:

Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article XIV, Paragraph 1 to read: The jib luff wire shall be optional, yet when installed have a maximum diameter of 1/8” and be constructed of 1×19 stainless steel.

Advantages to TCA:

  • Reduces cost of ownership
  • Luff wire serves no structural purpose with today’s sail cloth
  • Luff wire is a remnant of an older design where the jib luff and the headstay were on a balance toggle.  The balance toggle is no longer used.
  • Reduce the cost of jibs by approximately $20.00
  • Eliminate a source of rust stains on some sails
  • This modification does not give any sailor a speed advantage over another sailor

PRO Comments: TBD

CON Comments:

  • Sailmakers would need to modify head and tack attachment points to accommodate lack of luff wire.
